Movember: the perfect excuse to book a check-up

Movember runs throughout Novembe
r, and what started with a group of mates in Melbourne in 2003 has grown into a global movement for men's health. As well as growing a moustache and raising funds, Movember is about getting men talking about prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention. This year, why not mark Movember by booking a check-up?
Why men put off seeing the GP
Many men spend more time looking after everyone else than they do looking after themselves, and it's common to wait until symptoms are hard to ignore. Regular check-ups can pick up problems early, when they are easier to treat, and give you a chance to raise anything that has been on your mind.
Prostate health
Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australian men. If you're noticing changes such as needing to pass urine more often, getting up at night, or difficulty starting, it's worth booking an appointment. If you're considering prostate cancer testing, your GP can explain the benefits and limitations of the PSA blood test, taking into account your age and family history, so you can make an informed decision.
Testicular cancer
Testicular cancer is one of the most common cancers in young men, and it has very good outcomes when found early. Get to know what's normal for you, and see your GP if you notice a lump, swelling, a feeling of heaviness, or any other change.
Mental health
Stress, anxiety, depression and sleep problems are common, and they are nothing to be embarrassed about. You don't need to be in crisis to talk to your GP. Support may include practical strategies, lifestyle changes, medication where appropriate, or a Mental Health Treatment Plan for subsidised sessions with a psychologist.
If you need to talk to someone now, Lifeline is available 24 hours a day on 13 11 14, and MensLine Australia on 1300 78 99 78. In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000).
Heart health and screening
From age 45, you may be eligible for a Medicare-supported Heart Health Check, which looks at your overall risk of heart attack and stroke. We direct bill Heart Health Checks to Medicare, so there is no cost to you. People aged 45 to 74 can also do a free bowel cancer screening test every two years. If you're 45 to 49, you can request your first kit online or ask us for one. Men aged 45 to 49 may also be eligible for the one-off 45–49 health assessment, which we direct bill to Medicare at no cost to you.
