Living with chronic pain
Chronic pain is generally defined as pain that lasts longer than three months. It can affect sleep, work, relationships, physical activity and mental wellbeing.
Many people have already tried a range of treatments before seeking further help and may feel frustrated or unsure where to turn next. We take the time to understand not only your pain, but also how it affects your day-to-day life, your goals and the treatments you've already explored.
Your first consultation
Your initial appointment is longer than a standard consultation, allowing enough time for a comprehensive assessment.
This includes discussing your medical history, how your pain began, factors that make it better or worse, treatments you've previously tried, current medications and the impact the pain is having on your daily activities.
If you have specialist letters, imaging reports, pathology results or other relevant medical information, please bring them with you to your appointment.
Developing your management plan
Managing chronic pain often involves more than one treatment.
Following your assessment, we'll work with you to develop an individual management plan based on your symptoms, medical history and personal goals. Depending on your circumstances, this may include medication review, lifestyle strategies, physical rehabilitation, education or referral to other health professionals.
We'll discuss the expected benefits, possible risks and alternative options so you can make informed decisions about your care.
Working with your healthcare team
For many people, chronic pain is best managed through a team approach.
Where appropriate, we can coordinate your care with physiotherapists, psychologists, exercise physiologists, specialist pain services and other healthcare providers involved in your treatment.
If you're eligible, we may also prepare a GP Chronic Condition Management Plan to support access to Medicare-subsidised allied health services.
Reviewing your progress
Chronic pain often changes over time, and treatment needs can change as well.
Regular follow-up appointments allow us to review your progress, assess how your management plan is working, make any necessary adjustments and continue working towards your goals.

Do I need a referral?
No. You can book an appointment directly. If you've previously seen another GP, specialist or allied health professional for your pain, please bring any relevant letters or reports to your first appointment.
How long is the first appointment?
Your initial consultation is longer than a standard appointment to allow time for a comprehensive assessment. When booking, please let our reception team know you're attending for chronic pain management.
Will I need follow up appointments?
Most people benefit from regular reviews, particularly when starting a new management plan or making changes to treatment. The timing of follow-up appointments will depend on your individual circumstances.
